Speakers: 
Lisa Karrow, MPT, CLT-LANA is a certified Lymphedema therapist who has worked with in Fairview for 20 years.  She obtained her masters of Physical Therapy from Mayo’s School of Health Related Sciences in Rochester, MN in 1993 and in 1997 earned her lymphedema certification.  She became nationally certified through the Lymphology Association of North America (LANA) in 2001.  Lisa has completed advanced level Edema/Lymphedema and Cancer Rehab Courses and has lectured on Edema management and lymphedema to both the University of MN, Fairview Rehab services and St. Catherine’s University Physical therapy programs.

 

Krista Thole, MS, OTR/L, CLT  is an occupational therapist and lymphedema therapist.  She received her MS of Occupational Therapy at the University of Minnesota.  Krista completed her lymphedema certification in 2011 from Norton School of Lymphatic Therapy using the Vodder Technique.  Krista has worked for Fairview since 2007 treating individuals in the in-patient and out-patient settings.  Currently, Krista works at the Fairview out-patient Specialty Rehab Clinic in Maple Grove. 

Course Description:
This course is designed to assist beginner to intermediate edema therapists (OT, PT, COTA, PTA), serving patients in Fairview and HealthEast inpatient settings, become more familiar with edema management including the medically complex patient.  Lymphedema certification is not required.  Medical conditions to be examined include: liver disease, kidney disease, CHF, DVTs, decreased skin integrity, cellulitis, DVTs, oncology-related edema, post-surgical, scrotal edema and medical edema.  It is recommended that individuals attending this course complete the ‘IP Edema Orientation’ process or are familiar with the orientation materials.  This course will review etiology of edema, precautions, contraindications for treatment, follow the care plan continuum including when to initiate, hold discontinue and provide appropriate discharge recommendations, discuss basic billing and documentation and examine variations in edema management techniques through case studies with emphasis on critical thinking and group discussion.
Objectives:
  1. Identify the etiology of edema presentation including the medically complex patient.
  2. Identify precautions and contraindications of edema management interventions including the medically complex patient. 
  3. Develop critical thinking skills to apply appropriate edema management techniques in the inpatient settings.
  4. Identify when edema management interventions and care plan should be modified.
  5. Identify when to refer a patient to OP/Home Care Edema services and how to initiate the referral process.
