Course Description:

Management of the shoulder complex in the rehabilitation setting can look drastically different depending on what the underlying pathology is. In this course, we will review common diagnostic categories of scapulothoracic and glenohumeral joints and will discuss appropriate management techniques based on recent evidence and consensus recommendations. We will cover topics including rotator cuff impingement and tears, shoulder instability, adhesive capsulitis, and proximal humerus fractures. We will also discuss both the surgical and non-surgical principles in caring for these individuals. Examination of the upper extremity with special attention to our diagnostic categories will be covered. Rehabilitation of both operative and non-operative conditions will be covered, including a review of best evidence for the different surgical options at the present time. Outcomes assessment and advanced tests and measures will be addressed with regard to objectively measuring progress in this population. Case studies will be presented. There will be several lab portions for this course.

Objectives:

  1. Describe relevant pathoanatomy of the shoulder related to various diagnoses
  2. Perform comprehensive, specific examination of the shoulder complex
  3. Review commonly used surgical management options and outcomes of these procedures
  4. Understand post-operative rehabilitation principles and stages
  5. Review current concepts regarding non-surgical management of shoulder pathologies
  6. Appropriately dose and progress therapeutic exercises for the shoulder complex with the goal of maximizing functional performance in ADL/IADL
  7. Develop manual skills useful in improving pain and mobility of the scapulothoracic and glenohumeral joints
