Management of Agitation and Delirium on the Acute Rehab Unit ( Microsoft Stream)

Course Description:
This course is based on current evidence-based research, and will focus on identification, diagnosis and management of delirium and agitation in the inpatient rehab setting. It will include practical Epic utilization, interdisciplinary intervention techniques and clinical case examples.
 
Instructors:
Elizabeth Wallace, MS, PA-C is a physician assistant at the M Health Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center.  She received a bachelor's degree in psychology and music from the College of St. Benedict.  She worked in long-term care for 10 years with patients with mental health diagnoses, stroke, and brain injury, where she discovered a passion for rehab medicine.  She left to pursue her master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies at Augsburg University, from which she graduated in 2019.  As a PA, she worked in pain medicine for 1 year before joining the PM&R team at the University of Minnesota.
Michael Kasprzak DO is a PM&R physician and assistant professor with the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Minnesota.  He completed residency training at Wayne State University School of Medicine as well as a Brain Injury Medicine fellowship.  He currently provides inpatient care at the Acute Rehabilitation Center and leads the outpatient Concussion Care Program. 
Meghan Matteson, BSN, RN is a staff nurse on the Acute Rehabilitation Center at M Health Fairview. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Metropolitan State University and a Bachelor of Science in Family Social Science from the University of Minnesota. Prior to starting her nursing career, she was a Hospital Advanced Pharmacy Technician and CPhT for M Health.
Katelyn Meyers, OTR/L MAOT is an Occupational Therapist at M Health Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center. She completed her Master’s in Occupational Therapy at St. Catherine University in 2013. Her work experience includes inpatient rehabilitation, transitional care, and long-term care. She previously worked on a Memory/Delirium transitional care unit. Over recent years her practice has been focused on post COVID-19 and stroke rehabilitation. She has presented at the MOTA and AOTA conferences.
Kristin Turnblom, DPT is a physical therapist at M Health Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center. She completed her Doctorate in Physical Therapy at the College of Saint Catherine and has been at the rehab unit since 2013, with experience also in acute care. She is an adjunct faculty with University of Minnesota Program in Physical Therapy. Her clinical interests include neurology, geriatrics, and amputee rehabilitation. She hopes the participant is not only better able to care for patients with agitation or delirium but carries forward some these concepts and practices for better patient experience regardless of setting or diagnoses.
Parisa Salehi, MD is a PM&R physician and an assistant professor at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Minnesota. She completed her residency at the University of Minnesota in 2016 and has worked at the Acute Rehab Center and Clinics and Surgery Center since then. Her clinical focus is neuro-rehabilitation, neuro-modulation, and electrodiagnostic medicine.
Sharon Kimble, DPT, is a Physical Therapist at M Health Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center. She received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Health Sciences, The Chicago Medical School.  In 2009 she earned a transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy from Saint Catherine University. She is certified in both geriatrics and neurology through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and as an exercise expert for ageing adults (CEEAA). Sharon has worked on the Inpatient Acute Rehab Unit since 2006.  Her current areas of interest include stroke recovery and amputation care, along with geriatric community health and falls prevention. She is instructor for the APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program and is adjunct faculty in the St. Catherine University PTA program.
 
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
  • Apprehend the clinical presentation of delirium and agitation and its impact on hospital course and outcomes
  • Identify a clinical tool to screen patients who may be at risk for hospital-acquired delirium.
  • Discern possible etiologies of delirium and agitation.
  • Identify five medical work-up options used to diagnose underlying medical etiologies of agitation and/or delirium.
  • Recognize and implement non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions for agitated/delirious patients.
  • Identify key concepts for clinical decision-making and use of presented resources in interdisciplinary management of patient population.
