Course description:
The course is based on current evidence-based research, will focus on evaluation of the structures contributing to pain and instability of the hemiplegic shoulder. The second topic area, based that is also based on research work will introduce PT’s and OT’s to the management of the hemiplegic upper extremity with positioning, bracing, electrical stimulation, and adaptive equipment to maximize recovery for mobility and ADL’s.
Instructor(s):
Parisa Salehi, MD is a PM&R physician and an assistant professor at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Minnesota. She completed her residency at the University of Minnesota in 2016 and has worked at M Health Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center and Clinics and Surgery Center since then. Her clinical focus is neuro-rehabilitation and neuro-modulation. She has presented at several national and international conferences and is active in training medical students and resident physicians.
Katelyn Meyers, OTR/L MAOT is an Occupational Therapist at M Health Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center. She completed her Master’s in Occupational Therapy at St. Catherine’s University in 2013. Her work experience includes inpatient rehabilitation, transitional care, and long-term care. Her clinical work focuses on functional electrical stimulation for upper extremity neurologic deficits. She has presented at the MOTA and AOTA conferences. Maura Kelly, DPT is a Physical Therapist at M Health Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center. She completed her Doctor of Physical Therapy at Marquette University in 2016. Her work focuses on neurologic rehabilitation, with specific interest in post-stroke gait mechanics and optimizing seating and positioning. As an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor, she has a strong focus on student education, and holds a position as clinical faculty at St. Catherine’s University. Sharon Kimble, DPT, is a Physical Therapist at M Health Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center. She received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Health Sciences, The Chicago Medical School. In 2009 she earned a transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy from Saint Catherine’s University. She is certified in both geriatrics and neurology through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Sharon has worked on the Inpatient Acute Rehab Unit since 2006. Her current areas of interest include stroke recovery and amputation care, along with geriatric community health and falls prevention. She is instructor trainer for the APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor course and is an instructor in the St. Catherine’s University PTA program.
