The complexity of the shoulder joint combined with the high presentation variability can make it a difficult area to examine, diagnose, and treat. Understanding principles of shoulder anatomy, biomechanics, and tissue irritability can help simplify the treatment of shoulder injuries/conditions and to improve patient outcomes. This course will review these principles as well as exam techniques, PT treatment concepts, and return to sport/activity decision making when treating non-operative shoulders in out-patient physical therapy. Instructor: Matt Asuma PT, DPT is a physical therapist with M Health Fairview at the Blaine – National Sport Center clinic. He earned his DPT from the St. Catherine University in 2008 and completed the Minnesota Sports Medicine Sports PT Residency (now M Health Fairview Sports PT Residency) in 2009. Matt became a Board Certified Specialist in Sports PT in 2010 and has developed a passion for lower and upper extremity sports and orthopedic injuries and conditions. He has had the opportunity to work closely with some of the Twin Cities top upper and lower extremity orthopedic physicians and surgeons over the past 17 years. In addition to patient care, Matt serves as one of the primary mentors of the M Health Fairview Sports PT Residency and has worked in that role since 2015. He also is the program lead for M Health Fairview’s “Next Step” return to sport rehab program.
