Motivational Interviewing - Beginning/Refresher Course
This is a Motivational interviewing course. If you have had previous experience in Motivational Interviewing, please take the self-assessment (using the link below). This will help you determine if you need to take level 1 (Beginner) or if you feel comfortable bypassing level 1 and only taking level 2 (Intermediate). You can register for level 2 (Intermediate) course on the CE webpage or continue to register for the Beginner course using the link at the bottom of the page.

Contact hours: 3.5 Contact hours (.35 ASHA CEU's)
PT/PTA: Course will be submitted to the MN Board of PT for approved credits. (submitting credits through the MN Board of PT does not guarantee full credits will be approved by the board)
SLP: This course will be registered through ASHA for full course participation. Participant information will not be submitted to the ASHA CE registry for partial credit and hours will be adjusted on your course certificate if the course is not attended in full.
OT: You will receive a certificate of course completion with total CE contact hours. M HEALTH Fairview is no longer an approved provider through AOTA and has never been for distance learning. (You will receive a certificate of completion which you may use towards your professional license) You may still submit the hours towards your licensure and receive a certificate of completion with all information provided to submit. M HEALTH Fairview is not an approved provider through AOTA. For additional information about CE requirements for license, please see MN Statute 148.6443: https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/148.6443 MN statutes 143.6443, subdivision SUBD.2 “Standards for determining the qualified education activities” will continue to be utilized in determining appropriate OT related CE courses. Instructor: Jen Packard, MA, NBC-HWC, is certified as a Wellness Coach by Mayo Clinic and is also a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach. She has a master’s degree in Counseling and Psychological Services. As a former director of both the Mayo Clinic Wellness Coach Training Program and the Mayo Clinic Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training Program, Jen is an internationally recognized coach, educator and trainer. She has over 20 years of experience in developing the interpersonal communication competencies of health and wellness professionals. Jen has partnered with departments of public health, large and small hospital systems, and wellness organizations to provide group training and individual mentorship to professionals wanting to increase their interpersonal effectiveness and ability to lead and affect change. Jen’s approach is strongly grounded in the strengths, values and goals of her clients. She leads powerful and inspiring conversations that lead to key insights, and applies a unique process of exploration, envisioning and experimenting in her coaching process.

Beginner Course summary:
This basic course introduces the core principles and techniques of MI, focusing on building rapport and enhancing client engagement. Participants learn to recognize and respond to clients' ambivalence about change, using reflective listening and open-ended questions. The course emphasizes practical skills through role-playing and real-life scenarios to help professionals effectively support clients in their change process. Consider taking this brief self-assessment to determine whether you should take this beginner course before enrolling in the Intermediate course.
Learning Objectives Re-Introduction to MI – Reboot and Renew The goal of the Beginner course will be to inspire and energize the participants, motivating new learners and reengaging learning who have been exposed to MI in the past.

- Describe the four tasks of MI and how they integrate and build upon the Transtheoretical Model (Stages of Change).
