Course Description:

Patient handling skill development maximizes patient outcomes while reducing effort and risk of injury by rehab staff. The course will cover ways to use mechanical advantages, decrease inherent injury risks, and educate therapists on handling techniques for heavier assist patients for bed mobility, repositioning, scooting, sitting balance, stands, and standing balance.

Instructor:

Brittany Dressler, PT, DPT, CBIS, NCS has 10 years of experience in rehabilitation in acute care, acute inpatient rehab and outpatient rehabilitation. She comes with experience in early and intensive mobility progressions with complex neuro and ICU patients and being Neuro IFRAH® trained. She is Clinical Faculty to St Kate's PT students and offers clinical interdisciplinary leadership to advance handling skills to foster faster outcomes and more acute rehabilitation facility acceptances.

University of Minnesota Program in Physical Therapy. Her clinical interests include neurology, geriatrics, and amputee rehabilitation. She hopes the participant is not only better able to care for patients with agitation or delirium but carries forward some these concepts and practices for better patient experience regardless of setting or diagnoses.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify when and how to utilize mechanical advantages with patient handling
  • Assess inherent risks of injury and 5 risk reduction strategies
  • Identify 10 techniques to utilize with neuro patient populations including skilled rehab handling for bed mobility, transfers, and balance.
