Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)

Instructor:

Elizabeth Johnson, MS, CCC-SLP is a Pediatric SLP at M Health Fairview Woodbury Pediatric Specialty Clinic; Joined M Health Fairview in April 2021. Completed 40 hours of continuing education related specifically to Childhood Apraxia of Speech and an additional 30 hours of continuing education related to early speech and language acquisition. Guest lectured at University of Minnesota in 2020, 2021, and 2022 on Childhood Apraxia of Speech in their graduate speech program. Current Clinical Faculty at University of Wisconsin - River Falls supervising graduate students in the on-campus clinic and teaching undergraduate courses.

Course description:  

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a developmental speech disorder that impacts accuracy of sound production. Individuals and clinicians often have difficulty accurately diagnosing and treating CAS, which can lead to limited progress if not properly diagnoses and treated. This course will review the main features of CAS and an overview of appropriate assessment components. This course will also provide an overview of the current evidence-based treatment approaches and examples of each treatment approach. Individuals taking this course will also be able to increase their ability to differentially diagnose CAS from related disorders. Following this course, individuals should be able to create appropriate goals for CAS. The overall goal of this course if to advance SLP's understanding of Childhood Apraxia of Speech to provide accurate diagnosis and treatment to clients and their families.
