Instructor:

 Rosie Taylor, MS, OTR/L is a Clinical Specialist 1 in Functional Cognition for Occupational Therapy. Rosie graduated from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse MS OT program in 2014. She has worked in transitional care, home care, and inpatient acute rehabilitation. She is currently working at M Health Fairview Inpatient Acute Rehab Center. She works with a variety of patient populations in this setting including stroke, SCI, amputation, oncology, cardiopulmonary, and orthopedic conditions.  Rosie is involved in system wide initiatives around inpatient cognitive screens and assessments. She has completed several FV system wide presentations regarding cognitive related topics in the past 5 years.

Course description:  

This is a 1-hour course intended to expand awareness and knowledge of functional cognition specific to rehab intervention planning. Functional cognition is how an individual utilizes cognitive constructs to perform everyday activities. Rehab professionals have a vital role in identifying patient cognitive impairments and developing safe discharge plans. Course attendees will review typical diagnoses with cognitive decline and available cognitive screens and assessments. They will be educated on intervention approaches, developing/administered treatments plans, how to track progress, and how to develop discharge plans. Collaboration with other disciplines of care will also be included to reinforce the importance of a team approach to managing cognitive deficits. The course is geared towards Occupational Therapists working in adult inpatient hospital settings but may be application to outpatient and homecare settings.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the attendee should be able to: 
  • Identify patient diagnoses that demonstrate cognitive decline
  • Identify cognitive screens and assessments that quantify cognitive decline
  • Identify functional cognitive intervention approaches
  • Develop and administer a functional cognitive intervention plan
  • Identify outcome measures and considerations for safe discharge planning
  • Describe appropriate collaboration strategies with other disciplines of care specific to management of cognitive deficits
